On the day chosen for celebration 16 August I think , crowds flowed out into the streets of central Melbourne, and gathered at scenic places around the Bay. I was taken down to the Esplanade, on the Bay at Albert Park, which was thronged with people of all ages, all waving our little Australian flags, shouting and jostling as we moved up and down the wide roadway, sharing the relief and joy that we were all intent on expressing.
