Block sites that promote eating disorders (e.g. proAna)

Once a secret illness, anorexia has reached the limelight on the Internet among adolescent girls hoping to eventually look like their favorite excessively thin celebrity idol. Despite efforts to raise awareness of the dangers of extreme weight loss and eating disorders, the pro-ana and pro-mia movements have proliferated in cyberspace, and the number of young girls and women with eating disorders has increased.

Anorexia is the third most common chronic illness among adolescents.

I find myself in a similar situation to another OpenDNS user, trying to help his daughter recover from an eating disorder by blocking access to the many different types of proAna, and other pro eating disorder websites. Like the previous user, it took me just a few minutes to hit the 25 maximum domains, there are hundreds if not thousands of these webpages that promote the eating disorders, which can and have killed people.

Did a support ticket ever get raised to this problem, and is there anything we can do to expedite development of a category that would block or at least limit access to these types of pages? New categories can be suggested at the bottom of this page. And according to this blog , this falls under the Tasteless category, and related sites are found there already. So you know what to block now. Actually it looks as though I already had ‘Tasteless’ filter on.

It doesn’t seem very effective, many of the pro-ana sites load without restriction. The process of domain tagging and approval seems to take quite a while, and will not always get an approved block; what one finds unacceptable another may not etc. I understand that it’s a community activity, but I need some fast results – other than turning the internet off in our house, not a very practical solution. Best is you go for local content filtering if you have so specific requirements.

Blocking with the hosts file is very effective and a good starting point. I’ve suggested a new Category that would be just easier to tag for people sharing this not-so-specific requirement.

Pinterest Bans Pro-Anorexia Content to Little Effect

Lucie Schwartz. Lucie is a French-American journalist and documentary filmmaker with a strong background in television production and international reporting. She is committed to producing content that promotes social change and elevates the status of women.

Online “pro-ana” and “pro-mia” sites go so far as to actively encourage and model disordered eating behaviors associated with anorexia and bulimia.

Eating disorders are on the rise, and pro-anorexia sites only act to encourage dangerous behaviour. Research published this week found to websites which promote anorexia and bulimia, each receiving thousands of hits every day. We’ve seen and heard enough about ‘pro-ana’ websites to have a fair idea of what they are. You may even have visited them out of curiosity or even as a ‘user’. I’ll spare the detail because part of the problem is that in reporting on this subject, many publications go a few steps too far and actually give away the absurd, stupid and often dangerous tips and messages that these websites unashamedly dish out to vulnerable visitors.

It seems completely illogical for a ‘journalist’ to report on the extreme dangers of these websites and the behaviours that they encourage, only to illustrate their piece with images taken directly from the ‘thinspiration’ galleries of those websites — but somehow, many do and see no problem in or consequence of doing that. I have always worried that bringing attention to pro-ana websites could be detrimental and actually provoke more people to visit the sites.

I do know from my own research as much as I absolutely loathe to look at these sites that there seems to be an increasing demand on whoever runs these sites to provide visitors with both female and male ‘thinspiration’. It’s safe to say this is something which clearly has an impact on both sexes. I have always been adamant that pro-ana sites do not cause eating disorders and found for the most part that most people I know who have or have had an eating disorder claimed not to have visited these sites; many not even having heard of thinspiration or any of those ridiculous quotes that go alongside them.

You know the ones, and if you don’t, be glad.

In the alternate reality of anorexia and bulimia, no thin is too thin, and control and perfection are codes for continued starvation. Nearly all 91 percent of the sites they found were easily accessible to casual browsers, and most 84 percent presented pro-ana content, while about two-thirds presented pro-mia content.

Yet as Borzekowski and her colleagues found, there are also many ambiguous and contradictory messages on these sites. More than a third 38 percent contained recovery-related information, for example. In part this may reflect a desire to evade legal liability or adverse action by website hosting companies, says Borzekowski. The thematic ambiguity on some of these sites may also simply reflect their role as virtual communities of tolerance. Sarah Brotsky, PsyD, a psychologist in private practice in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, spent two months participating in these online communities for a research project published in That sense of social validation can derive from the content too, Brotsky adds.

The Royal College of Psychiatrists RC Psych is calling for urgent action to protect vulnerable young people from eating-disorder websites. It says the number of websites promoting eating disorders has soared with the growth of social networking. It has called on UKCCIS , which was established a year ago, to expand its definition of harmful web content to include what it calls pro-ana anorexia and pro-mia bulimia websites.

Research shows that, even for healthy young women, viewing such websites induces low mood , low self-esteem and increased body dissatisfaction.

Just one month after Tumblr banned content that “actively promotes or glorifies self-injury or self-harm,” Pinterest has updated its terms of service to prevent users from pinning content of a similar nature. This is the second update Pinterest has made to its terms of service in the past week. Pinterest now expressly forbids any content that “creates a risk of harm, loss, physical or mental injury, emotional distress, death, disability, disfigurement or physical or mental illness to yourself, to any other person, or to any animal.

To read the Terms of Service in full, click here. Pinterest users have the media to thank for the update. Blogs including Jezebel have done much to spread awareness of pro-anorexia and “thinspiration” boards, where women with eating disorders exchange motivational images and tips for making themselves unhealthily thin. Despite the update to its terms of service, Pinterest seems to have done little-to-nothing to edit out the pro-anorexia content. A search for one of the most popular related tags, “thinspo,” yields thousands of pins of thin, scantily clad women: some arguably healthy, others not see above.
